Bordeaux ne lâche pas Marseille!

     

Toujours autant de suspens pour le titre et pour le maintien

 

     En haut, Bordeaux recolle à Marseille, Lyon coule, Paris et Lille loupent le coche, Toulouse et Rennes se replacent. En bas, Caen garde espoir, St Etienne et Nantes n’y arrivent toujours pas. Voilà ce qu’il faut retenir de cette 34ème journée. Passons maintenant aux résumés des matchs.

     Commençons tout de suite avec les matchs du samedi soir et Valenciennes - Lyon. Ce match était censé relancer Lyon dans la course au titre ou du moins, les rassurer. Ce ne fut pas du tout le cas. Après vingt bonnes premières minutes, les lyonnais se laissent surprendre bêtement à deux reprises en six minutes, aux 23ème et 29ème minutes avec un doublé d’Audel. Sur les deux buts, la défense est loin d’être irréprochable et toute la fébrilité de Lyon peut être observée. Les lyonnais essayent de réagir en seconde période mais sans succès, comme un constat d’impuissance. Grâce à cette victoire (2-0), Valenciennes assure très certainement son maintien tandis que Lyon voit le titre définitivement s’éloigner et va maintenant devoir lutter pour conserver sa 3ème place, synonyme de tour préliminaire de la Ligue des Champions.

     Match très intéressant à Yves Allainmat entre Lorient et Lille. Après deux défaites consécutives, les lillois devaient absolument s’imposer pour se remettre dans la course au podium. Cela commence plutôt bien pour les hommes de Rudi Garcia avec un but de Cabaye à la 36ème minute. Mais peu après l’heure de jeu, Ciani égalise d’un beau coup de tête.      Passons aux matchs sans grands enjeux. Au terme d’un match très hâché et très pauvre en occasion, Grenoble et Nice se séparent sur un score nul et vierge. A noter tout de même l’expulsion du grenoblois Touré peu après l’heure de jeu et le poteau touché par Courtois toujours pour Grenoble. Autre match sans grand intérêt, Monaco-Auxerre. Grâce à un but de Kahlenberg à la 26ème , les auxerrois s’imposent assez logiquement face à une faible équipe monégasque (0-1). Ces quatre équipes ont depuis plus ou moins longtemps assuré leur maintien et jouent désormais pour une éventuelle 8ème place, actuellement détenue par Nice justement.

     Continuons avec deux matchs concernant la lutte pour le maintien. Il s’agit de St Etienne - Nancy et de Caen - Le Mans. Devant leur public, les stéphanois doivent s’imposer pour sortir de la zone rouge. Face à une équipe très regroupée, les verts se créent beaucoup d’occasions mais leur domination reste stérile. Mais à la 51ème , les stéphanois trouvent enfin la brèche. Sur un bon service d’Ilan, Payet croit ouvrir le score mais l’arbitre assistant signale un hors-jeu pourtant inexistant. Le score en reste là (0-0). Alors que Nancy se dirige tranquillement vers son maintien, les hommes d’Alain Perrin perdent deux points importants dans cette lutte et sont désormais 19ème. En effet, dans le même temps, Caen s’est imposé contre Le Mans et dépasse justement St Etienne. Les caennais débutent parfaitement leur match et ouvrent le score dès la 8ème par Barzola. Mais une nouvelle fois, les hommes de Franck Dumas se laissent surprendre et se font rejoindre par les manceaux avec un but de Cerdan. Mais contrairement aux fois précédentes, les caennais ne se sont pas écroulés et ils parviennent logiquement à reprendre l’avantage grâce à Seube. 4 minutes plus tard, Deroin clôt la marque (3-1). Les normands sortent enfin de la zone des relégables. De leur côté, les manceaux gardent une petite marge avec 38 points mais attention à ne pas s’écrouler sur les 4 derniers matchs!

     Enchaînons avec le grand match du samedi : Marseille - Toulouse. Les marseillais avaient l’occasion, avant le match de Bordeaux, de prendre 5 points d’avance sur ces mêmes bordelais en cas de victoire. Mais ce sont les toulousains qui frappent les premiers. Après une première période assez terne, Sissoko profite d’une mauvaise relance d’Hilton pour donner un bon ballon à Gignac qui après un bon crochet, trompe Mandanda du gauche. Les marseillais réagissent peu après l’heure de jeu avec Niang qui trompe Carasso de la tête. Commence un assaut marseillais sur les buts toulousains mais les hommes de Gerets doivent faire face à un Carasso d’un grand soir. Face à son club de formation et de cœur, le portier toulousain permet à ses coéquipiers de rester dans le coup. Et ce sont même les toulousains qui reprennent l’avantage. Au terme d’un contre très bien joué, Braaten sert parfaitement Gignac qui marque avec plein de sang-froid. Mais dans la minute suivante, les marseillais égalisent sur une frappe de Niang déviée par Cetto qui prend Carasso à contre-pied. Les hommes d’Eric Gerets poussent dans le dernier quart d’heure pour prendre les 3 points mais le score ne bouge plus (2-2). Les marseillais perdent 2 points importants dans la course au titre alors que Toulouse montre qu’il ne faut pas les oublier et qu’ils seront là jusqu’au bout pour disputer la 3ème place avec Paris, Lyon voir Lille.

     Passons aux matchs du dimanche avec Nantes - Le Havre. Les nantais devaient impérativement s’imposer pour se donner un peu d’air et repasser devant Caen et Sochaux. Cela commence plutôt bien car, après un début de match assez pauvre, les nantais ouvrent le score grâce à un but plutôt de Bekamenga. Mais en fin de première période, les havrais, qui jouent sans pression, égalisent par Diallo. A l’heure de jeu, les havrais et Marange prennent l’avantage. Malgré quelques occasions en fin de match, les canaris ne reviennent pas (1-2). Si Le Havre n’est pas encore mathématiquement en ligue 2, Nantes s’en rapproche.

     Continuons avec le deuxième match du dimanche après-midi. Paris accueillait Rennes avec la possibilité pour les parisiens de passer 3ème en cas de victoire. Après une première période d’un niveau d’une faiblesse assez inquiétante pour des équipes qui visent l’Europe, les parisiens entament mieux la seconde période. On se demande encore comment les hommes de Paul Le Guen ont réussi à ne pas marquer à l’heure de jeu : Après une tête de Luyindula sortie de sa lucarne par Douchez, Kezman voit sa frappe une nouvelle fois repoussée par Douchez du bout des doigts et Luyindula, à bout portant, ne peut faire mieux que de tirer sur le poteau du gardien rennais. Mais avec 54 points, les bretons se rapprochent de Lille et peuvent encore espérer accrocher une place européenne autrement qu’avec la Coupe de France.

     Finissons avec Bordeaux - Sochaux qui concluait la 34ème journée de ligue 1. Les bordelais avaient l’occasion de revenir à la hauteur de Marseille en cas de victoire contre des sochaliens qui avaient besoin de points pour s’éloigner de la zone rouge. Le suspens fut de courte durée : Les bordelais ouvrent le score dès la 7ème minute avec un but du jeune Sertic. Gourcuff double la mise au quart d’heure de jeu. Le match semble déjà plié. Malgré quelques séquences de jeu intéressantes, les sochaliens n’arrivent pas à revenir. Dans la lutte pour le maintien, Caen fait la bonne opération en sortant de la zone rouge alors que Saint-Etienne, Sochaux et Nantes n’avancent pas.

DETROIT, Feb 16 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Thursday sentenced a Nigerian man to life in prison for trying to blow up a U.S. airliner bound for Detroit on Christmas Day in 2009.

"This was an act of terrorism that cannot be quibbled with," said U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds, who imposed the maximum sentence allowed.

A bomb hidden in the underwear of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, now 25, caused a fire but failed to explode on a Delta Airlines flight from Amsterdam carrying 289 people on December 25.

Abdulmutallab, who wore a white T-shirt and skull cap, sat impassively as the sentence was read out in a crowded Detroit court room.

Earlier, he used a four-minute address to the court to repeat that his attack was intended to avenge "the attacks of the United States on Muslims."

"The jihadi is proud to kill in the name of God and that is exactly what God told us to do in the Koran," said Abdulmutallab, who had pleaded guilty in October.

Edmunds said Abdulmutallab represented a threat to U.S. citizens and noted that he had not shown any remorse during two years in a federal prison in Milan, Michigan.

Prosecutors said Abdulmutallab had intended to bring down the jet over U.S. soil and was thwarted only by luck.

They showed a short video of the kind of blast that the powerful explosive known as PETN, which Abdulmutallab had hidden in his underwear, could have caused if it had detonated.

Several passengers who were on the flight told the judge they were still haunted by the attempted attack.

LeMare Mason, a Delta flight attendant who helped put out the fire caused by the bomb, said he was still suffering from night sweats and a dread of flying.

"I had a dream job of traveling the world and meeting all types of people. This man stole and robbed from me the pleasure. It's punishment going to work now. It's not a joy," he told Edwards ahead of the sentencing.

Prosecutors last week offered new details about the plot, which they said was directed by U.S.-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who had become an al Qaeda leader in Yemen.

Awlaki was killed in a drone attack in Yemen last September. In court papers, the FBI identified Awlaki as "chief of external operations" for al Qaeda's Yemen branch as well as an Internet-savvy propagandist and recruiter.

RALEIGH, N.C. �� Lawyers for John Edwards have asked a judge to limit the testimony of longtime aide Andrew Young at the former presidential candidate's upcoming campaign finance trial.

Edwards' lawyers and prosecutors submitted court filings Wednesday over expected testimony from Young about conversations he had with heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon and campaign finance chairman Fred Baron. The conversations regarded money used to help hide Edwards' pregnant mistress as he sought election to the White House.

Defense lawyers said Young's testimony would amount to hearsay, or out-of-court statements that can't be verified, since Baron is dead and the 101-year-old Mellon is too frail to testify at trial.

Prosecutors contend that Young's testimony is permissible under an exemption that allows a member of a conspiracy to testify about statements made by co-conspirators.

Edwards' lawyers argue that no such conspiracy existed.

"There also is no question that Mr. Edwards and Young agreed to hide the truth about Ms. Hunter's baby, and that Mr. Edwards knew and agreed that Young should claim that he (and not Mr. Edwards) was the father," Edwards' lawyers wrote. "There is no evidence, however, that Young believed that he had an agreement with Mr. Edwards to commit a crime."

To bolster their position, Edwards' lawyers quote from Young's 2010 tell-all bestseller, The Politician. In the book, Young described the nearly $1 million paid by Baron and Mellon as "gifts, entirely proper, and not subject to campaign finance laws."

Edwards has pleaded not guilty to six felony and misdemeanor charges related to campaign finance violations. He denies knowing about the money flowing from his wealthy donors to Young, then one of his closest aides. Young falsely claimed paternity of Edwards' child and, with his wife, traveled across the country with the mistress, Rielle Hunter, in an attempt to avoid the media.

Prosecutors also disclosed Wednesday that they intend to call two other former Edwards' staffers as witnesses.

Former Edwards press secretary Jennifer Palmieri is expected to testify she was present in an Iowa hotel room in October 2007 when wife Elizabeth Edwards confronted the candidate, Baron and Baron's wife, Lisa Blue, about the couple's support of Hunter.

According to Palmieri's account, Baron and Blue tried to calm Edwards' angry wife by saying that the mistress was a "loose cannon" who had to be kept happy, lest she go to the press.

Eileen Mancera, a financial advisor to the Edwards campaign, is expected to testify that Baron called her in early January 2008 to chastise her for offering her services to the Obama campaign. Baron urged Mancera to stick with Edwards in the hope he would be named the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, according to the government.

Edwards dropped out of the presidential race on Jan. 30, 2008. He later admitted to fathering Hunter's child, effectively ending his political hopes.

Edwards' criminal trial was to begin at the end of January but was delayed after his lawyers told the judge he has a serious heart condition that requires treatment. A new start date for the trial has not yet been set.
CNN announced Thursday that it has canceled an upcoming debate after Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum all said they would either not attend or were not planning to attend.

Romney's camp suddenly said Thursday that it was planning to skip the debate, intended for March 1st in Georgia, because he would be "campaigning in other parts of the country" ahead of the packed Super Tuesday primaries on March 6. Ron Paul also announced that he would not be attending. Santorum's spokesman said that his candidate "has no plans of doing it right now."

Faced with a debate without so many participants, CNN said that it was throwing in the towel:

"Mitt Romney and Ron Paul told the Georgia Republican Party, Ohio Republican Party and CNN Thursday that they will not participate in the March 1 Republican presidential primary debate. Without full participation of all four candidates, CNN will not move forward with the Super Tuesday debate. However, next week, CNN and <a href="http://www.monsterol.com/monster-beats-pro-c-5.html">Monster Beats Pro</a> the Arizona Republican Party will host all four leading contenders for the GOP nomination. That debate will be held in Mesa, Arizona on February 22 and will be moderated by CNN's John King."

Newt Gingrich ��whose entire candidacy has been propelled by his debate performances�� was seemingly the only contender who was up for the session. His spokesman, R.C. Hammond, used the cancellation to take some jabs at Romney, tweeting that he had "[spit] <a href="http://www.monsterol.com/monster-beats-power-c-6.html">Monster Beats Power</a> in Georgia's face" and asking, "If @MittRomney won't stand up and debate his GOP competitors how will he face President Obama?"

Of course, it's not as if the candidates haven't had a chance to talk to each other about the issues throughout the campaign. Romney's statement on Thursday pointedly said that he had "participated in 20 debates, including 8 on CNN."

The staggering number of debates, and the influence they've had on the GOP contest, has become a key part of the 2012 campaign. Some, such as GOP strategist Karl Rove and Sen. John McCain, have said that the debates have played too prominent <a href="http://www.monsterol.com/monster-butterfly-c-2.html">Monster Butterfly</a> a role in the campaign, forcing the candidates to curtail their interactions with voters in favor of time-consuming preparation for the face-offs.

In an interview with HuffPost's Michael Calderone, CNN's Washington bureau chief Sam Feist defended the debates.

"I think they've been great for the process," Feist said. "I think you learn more in a presidential debate than any other way of getting to know a candidate. They're certainly a more valuable way to get to know the candidate for president of the United States than sound bites on newscasts and 30-second ads that are often misleading."
TRENTON, N.J. �� The New Jersey Assembly on Thursday passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriages, setting the stage for an expected veto by Gov. Chris Christie.

The 42-33 vote sends the bill to Christie, who won't take immediate action. The Republican governor who opposes gay marriage had promised "very swift action" if the bill passed both houses of the Legislature, but the Assembly isn't required to send the bill to his desk until the close of business Friday. The Senate approved the bill Monday.

"Without question this is a historic day in the state of New Jersey," Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver said after the vote. She said she had never been more proud of the Democratic caucus for doing "what citizens sent us here to do: to deliberate, to use the legislative process to represent the interests of all New Jerseyans."

Steven Goldstein, chairman of the gay rights group Garden State Equality, echoed the speaker's sentiments.

"Today, the Legislature has brought us to the promised land," said Goldstein. "We know the governor won't let us enter, but we finally behold the view of our dreams and we will never turn back."
